14ga Romex not allowed?

October 25th, 2009

I’m wiring up some lights in a detached storage building next to my home. Circuit load will be nine 75 watt bulbs on two switched circuits, no outlets. Can I use 14/2 for this? I thought I had heard/read that 14ga is not allowed anywhere anymore, or maybe just not recommended. I usually use 12/2 everywhere, but with the price of copper and the fact that I have quite a bit of 14/2 around, I thought I would use it.

Also, code requiring that UF be used in unfinished storage buildings? Wiring would be exposed inside building, unfinished walls, unheated space. etc. Lighting only.

#14 is still allowed in most places. A few cities have mandated #12 as the smallest, but that’s rare. Check with your building department.

No, UF is not required inside an unfinished storage building unless the roof leaks.
