Thin Grass

October 31st, 2008

I have some thin areas in my lawn that I would like to thicken up and I was curious to know if I should overseed or spread that Scotts Patch Master stuff. Both methods say to break up the soil first. Any advice? Which is better?

Assuming that you have a cool season grass and planning to do fall law maintenance, there are several things you can do. A soil test will reveal what amendments needs to be made to the soil. Core aeration will open up the soil and allow for roots to receive greater nutrition and moisture when applied. Top dressing and overseeding often correct thin grass, if lawn receives proper levels of moisture and nutrition.

In addition to failure to maintain proper levels of nutrients and moisture, thin grass often occurs due to lack of enough sun due to shade and competition with tree roots for moisture and nutrients. There are shade grass varieties available, but all grass needs some sun. Thinning tree branches will allow for more sun to reach areas where grass is thin. Mulching areas beneath trees where tree roots compete with grass for moisture and nutrients provides an immediate solution to thin grass beneath trees.

Your local Cooperative Extension Agent can help with soil test, recommend amendments, and provide you with a recommended lawn maintenance schedule for your area.

Lost

October 31st, 2008

I have a GE SXS (GSS25SGMCBS SA243266). It’s frosting up under the ice bin and around the fan housing. This is causing the fan to freze up and make loud noises. Also the auger motor keeps frezing up until you defrost it. Cleared all ice fan was fine but the ice keeps coming back. I found no air leaks (Gaskets on doors and ice flap). Don’t know if it helps but at times when you open the door you can here water draing as if was cloged and broke free with the air pressure. Is it possibe to be defrosting to long?

You may have 2 problems. Is the ice dispenser door closing properly all the way? You can get a flashlight and shine it down the ice dispenser chute inside the freezer door, then look on the other side where the ice comes out the front and see if you notice the light from the flashlight, if so you’ll likely need a new solenoid.

New HVAC System Bids

October 31st, 2008

I need to replace my entire HVAC equipment setup (outside condenser, interior furnace and AC, but no ductwork needs be run) and have gotten a couple of bids. I thought someone might be able to give me some advice.

I have two Carrier system bids. They’re both 90% efficiency 80,000 BTU units with 3 ton AC. One is a 15 SEER the other is a 13. I should mention the house is a two-story home with about 1,500 sq ft on each of two levels. One level is a basement with little cooling needs. The difference in price is $2,000. I just don’t know if the 15 SEER AC is worth two grand.

I also got a bid on an Amana, 14 SEER 95% efficient 90,000 BTU system. It’s cheaper than the 13 SEER Carrier even.

Any reason I shouldn’t go with the Amana or should go with either of the Carriers?

Where are you located at? That would help understand your situation.

Any reason you aren’t looking at a heatpump/duel fuel system? You’ll save a significant amount of money with that.

As for Amana, they are a top notch product. I just had the Amana ASZ16 (2-stage 16 SEER) heat pump and AMV8 (80% 90,000 btu variable speed) furnace installed a month ago. I am averaging $1/day saving over my previous heat pump so far this summer. That is with an electric rate of $0.0779/kWh. The higher your electric rate, the more you’ll save with a higher SEER (more signficantly EER) rating.
