220V Stoves not Working
I have a 220V small stove in the basement next to my bar for small snacks and upstairs in the kitchen is the main stove.
A couple of days ago the basement stove stop working and I pull it out to check the wall plug behind. I used a neon light and noticed that I have power between the red and white but there is no power between the black and white. At the same time I noticed that the stove in the kitchen upstairs also is not working.
I went at the main breakers panel and flipped back and forth all breakers (don’t know which ones control the stoves) but the situation did not change.
What does it mean when there is power between the red and white and no power between the black and white?
Is it possible that the breakers are gone?
Thank you
Breakers can fail but it is rare. For 2 to fail at the same time is even more improbable.
It sound like there is a problem with the one hot leg in the panel. This would also show up in every other 120 volt circuit served by the same leg being dead. Are you having problems with the 120 volt circuits also?
Your panel directory really needs to be mapped out for your safety. Should you need to shut something off in an emergency or just to work on it it needs to be accurately identified. You could do this by plugging a portable radio in and turned up loud. Turn breakers off then on until the radio goes off. You could also use a breaker finder. To save some running around you could get someone to watch to see which lights went out and to move the radio into different rooms. Circuits can and may serve different rooms.
PS, most stove breakers would be a 2-pole 40 or 50 amp breaker. These will be twice as thick as the 120 volt breakers.
