AC window system is making a popping noise
My AC unit that is in the window is making a popping noise. It’s been there for a few years.I’ve noticed it doesn’t have a drain,so I drain it manually. Can anyone tell me why?.
Is it the air filter?.
Not sure exactly what you mean by a popping noise. Does it sound electrical or like water splashing?
Many later window AC units are manufactured to allow the retention of a little water in the pan (the water level in the pan gets deeper in high humidity). This water gets picked up by the condenser fan and splashed on the condenser to improve efficiency, as stated in this text from an LG window unit:
“…This air conditioner is equipped with a
slinger fan. (See drawing, below.)
The fan has an outer ring that runs in
the water that collects in the base pan
if it gets deep. That condensate is then
picked up by the fan and expelled
through the condenser, making the air
conditioner more efficient….”
