Air pockets in water pressure?

January 16th, 2010

Hi there!
Our neighbor’s water pipes burst (for some unknown reason) and flooded the street with water. The city came and shut his water off. He hooked up his house to our outside hose water supply so he would have running water in his home while he waits for the plumber to come in a few days.

Since this happened – the water pressure in our home has had an issue with air pockets, it seems like. When we turn on a faucet – it’s fine for about 30 seconds – then starts spitting and spattering, then runs fine again…and this cycle continues. Flushing the toilets also has the same issue…the water pressure doesn’t stay consistent and seems like there’s air pockets.

My question is – do you think this behavior is resulting in our neighbor being hooked up to our water supply? Is our system just not strong enough to handle supplying 2 households? Or are these symptoms alerting us to a more serious problem that needs immediate attention, such as our pipes are in danger of bursting as well?

I guess the quick answer would be to unhook our neighbor from out water supply and see if that fixes the issue. But I was hoping someone out there might have some advice and can shed some light before we do so.

Yes, unhook him for awhile to see if its because of his water leak, next make sure his valve/s are off at the water meter, make sure they are doubled check just don’t take someones word for it.

Another thing, the air could be coming from the water main in the street if they shut it off the city water main and turned it back on, call the water department and tell them what your problem is and ask them to flush the fire hydrants at each end of the block to purge the air out.
