Amana Ice Maker – ice has black stuff on it

October 27th, 2009

We bought our Amana Fridge back in 1995, not sure what the model # is but I can probably figure it out if it matters. It has an ice maker which has worked great since day one. Last week it started making ice that has black crud on it. At first I thought it was the filter I have installed on the water line, but replacing that didn’t help. Upon closer inspection of the defective cubes, it looks like black paint chips on the ice, like the coating on the forms is flaking off and sticking to the ice.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there a way to fix this without buying a whole new ice maker? Since this beast is already 13 years old, I’m not sure how much money we want to put into it.

Yup, I’ve seen this problem many times before, your ice maker mold is flacking, the only solution would be a new ice maker, all of them made now have a non-flacking surface.

We would need your model of your refrigerator to get you the correct one at the best price. Your model# should be located inside the refrigerator section on the uppers walls or ceiling. Also there should be a MFG# that starts with a “P”

Yea, if its a 1995 model, I wouldn’t invest alot of money into it either, but we can get you the price to see.
