Clogged Up!

November 27th, 2009

I have repeatedly been asked by an older neighbor to “unclog” her water supply lines, including appliances and faucets. All aerators/in-line screen filters become blocked by a semi-clear crystal like formation. I installed a single stage sediment filter to the main water supply, with no improvement. She has had this problem ever since going on “city” water. Any idea what this substance is (I suspect chlorine residue) and how to correct the situation?

You didn’t indicate what the piping was made of. My guess would be iron pipes, which are notorious for flaking over time and clogging up the strainers. The sediment filter will work, but it will take time. For the time being, let the kitchen and bath faucets run without the strainers. It may help flush the lines over time.
