Different Color Lawn

January 9th, 2010

I have an irrigation system and I water my lawn twice a week for longer periods. I have an area on my lawn that gets full sun but half of it is dark green and the other half is very light green to yellow. Any ideas why and how to fix? Thank you!

It’s possible that the irrigation system is not applying the water evenly. You can place some tuna cans in different areas of the lawn to see if you are getting even irrigation.Too, overwatering and underwatering can cause similar symptoms. Depending on soil type, a weekly deep watering is best for encouraging strong roots that seek out water. For more info on watering a lawn: http://www.cahe.nmsu.edu/pubs/_h/h-504.htmlIf lawn is sloped, it is possible that runoff is allowing excess water in the area that is turning yellow. Waterlogged lawns tend to turn yellow and often develop a fungus disease.Core aeration as part of annual lawn maintenance program will open up soil and allow for more even absorption of water. A soil test will reveal if there are any soil amendments that need to be made. For instance, you may have too much phosphorous that is tying up the iron in soil and an application of iron would provide temporary relief until core aeration and top dressing with compost can be made.St. Augustine grass can experience a decline due to virus. Plugging lawn with viral resistant variety can help restore lawn. Identifying cause of yellowing of lawn is of foremost importance. If you can not narrow down the cause, contact your local Cooperative Extension Agent re: getting soil test done and providing sample grass plants for identification of the problem and solution.
