Electrician Question
Hi,
I know this probably isn’t the right place for a question like this, but I thought it would be a start. I live in McDonough, GA and was wondering how I would go about acquiring an electrician’s license and how much it pays. I currently have a job paying around 55K per year in the telecommunications field. I thought about trying to get into the field end of it, since I am a hands-on type of person and am sort of ready for a change. I graduated from DeVry Institute of Technology in the field of Electronics Technology (commonly referred to Electronics Technician, but not the same). I am not sure if I would need extra schooling to learn about the electrical code as far as residential or businesses is concerned. I have also heard of people who are electricians that also have side jobs on the weekends. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks,
currently a inside wireman makes $27/hr in McDonough Georgia. I couldn’t find what an apprentice starts at but most locals I have heard are about 40-50% of wireman scale. Raises are every year so it does increase fairly rapidly.
it looks like there is $3.24 towards health and welfare and $2.70 into an annuity. The scary part is under pension, it says N/A. That doesn’t sound good but hopefully it does not mean there is no local pension (although there is a pension from the International which is paid from your dues)
Currently they have 240 unemployed members in the local. They claim to represent about 3600 members so that is near a 7% unemployment rate. The Georgia DOL lists the Georgia unemplyment rate at 5% so the rate the union shows is over the state level but this local represents about 1/3 of the state so there may be high unemployemnt in this local that is not in other locals.
