Family Feud Over Pee Traps In Bathroom Remodel

October 21st, 2009

I am a tile setter for 22 years and I am doing a basic shower remodel. I am moving the drain to the center of the shower.

Well- my room mates father is a plumber and he is insisting that I have to install another pee trap. I have remodel many bathrooms and never have installed another pee trap when moving the drain ! I even showed him the tub that was pulled out was there was no pee trap. I have always assumed that there is one underneathe the floor….I am going to install the pee trap b/c it is causing much grief but is this really necessary and isn’t there one already under the floor or am I totally wrong!!!

Hopefully someone can clear the family feud pee trap air

Your local building code office can clarify the issues that you have. Any changes in structure, plumbing, or electrical require approval by the local code office and may require permits and inspections.

First off, I would consider a “Pee” trap as a toilet.

A “trap” is needed for every fixture except the toilet because it is already built in. The most common trap used today is the “P” trap.
The reason for this, is it is self cleaning and less apt to self siphoning.
Traps are a water seal between the fixture and the waste system. Without them, you can get sewer gasses, bacteria, and bugs. Not to mention rodents. You want to have traps to protect the health of you and your family. Traps are definitely a safety item in your favor.

Many types of traps have been removed from the plumbing code due to their inefficiency.

If you have old plumbing, your tub could have a “drum” trap, and may not be located directly below the tub drain. If it is on the second floor the drum trap may have been located as to have access to the trap cover for cleaning purposes.

If you are not getting any odor in the bathroom, I would think there is some kind of trap, but that still should be verified. Adding a second trap is not always a good idea, as it is against some plumbing codes.

As Twelvepole has mentioned, You may want to check with local building authorities about your particular code in your area, to make sure it is done correctly.
