Float meter for a cistern

October 17th, 2009

Next fall I plan to add a rainwater cistern (for drinking water) as part of our home remodel project. I have already replumbed the existing water lines and have the fittings in place to switch over from our well to the projected cistern. I will leave the well plumbed for future use (i.e. not enough rain to keep the cistern filled during the summer, etc.). What I am looking for is a readable float meter I can install in the cistern and have some sort of read-out in the house so I can see when the water level in the cistern is getting low. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could find such a thing?

What will you be doing to treat the rain water so it is suitable for “drinking water”? Cistern water coming off a roof is not potable by any means. I would recommend consulting with a local water treatment professional. This is not a good DIY project.
