Freeway Median has more grass than my lawn
I just bought my first house and my lawn is in need of some work. The turf density is very thin in fact 95% of my lawn is Chickweed, Dandelion, Henbit, and Wild Onion. I have read a lot about similar situation but can’t find a definitive answer on how to approach it. I really don’t want to spend money on sod, but at the same time I don’t want to wait until fall to plant grass (from what I understand that is the ideal time to plant grass?). It seems as if I must start all over again, which I’m willing to do but don’t know where to start.
You have plenty of time to get some seed going. Grass seed will germinate in warmer temperatures (not over 80 degrees) as long as you keep it moist. You should use a product to kill weeds, first. Then add a layer of compost and seed. Use starting fertilizer. Keep moist until germinated, then water regularly until well established. You may want to do this again in the fall, as well as core aeration.
