Frigidaire FRS20WRH side/side frig

November 6th, 2009

Evap coils icing over, so I removed the back panel and defrosted the coils. Plugged her in and let her run ’bout an hour. Then checked the defrost thermostat & heater (Ohm check good on both with cold freezer). Ran the fridge for another couple of hours til I got good ice on coils. Cycled timer to defrost but still had ice after about 20 minutes. So I bought/installed a defrost timer.

I let the unit cool for about 3 hrs, then manually turned the timer to ‘defrost’. The timer cycled around to “Run”, but there was still ice on the bottom of the evap coils when compressor kicked on again.

I think I ran across the “correct way to check a defrost timer using an Ohm meter” during my previous scouting thru the forums, but I can’t locate it now.

How do I check the timer with my meter? Any chance the new timer is bad? Or did I not correctly check the thermostat & heater?
(Fridge is located 50 miles away and it’ll be a couple of days before I get back there.)

If it were me, I would short across the limit switch with a jumper, so the heater will come on when turned into the defrost cycle, and check it that way. If you can turn it into the defrost cycle, and it comes out on it own, and the compressor starts running, the defrost timer is working.
