Fuse Box Overloaded

October 5th, 2009

Upon inspection of my home I was told that my fuse box was overloaded. Apparently every fuse has 2 wires going to it against code. Anyway, I don’t plan to replace this immediately, even though I prolly should(I’m not rich so somet things have to wait). I do know an electrician but hes only been doing it for a year (so hes a low ranking one)

How far along in an apprenticeship program do you need to be to replace a fuse box in an older (’65) home?

Also how much do you think parts will be for the box? Is there a good place to order these online?

Do you really have a fuse box or is it a breaker box? Fuse boxes often have a 60 amp service or less. That means not only upgrading to a breaker box but upgrading your service. In my area $1000-$2000 and only a master electrician can pull a permit.

If you have a breaker box then we have a different situation. If you have a 100 amp service or greater you may just need a subpanel. Note two wires on a breaker in rare cases may be permissible depending on the breaker. You could also pigtail each of the doubled circuit and assuming they are not overloaded be ok.
