GE profile gas range JGB916seL1SS NO display, oven not working

November 26th, 2009

The gas range just lost it’s display and the oven stopped working. The gas burners on the top of the range are working fine.

From reading about this problem, I assume that either my keypad or the ERC is dysfunctional.

I am a novice at this kind of repair, so I called GE and asked them to schedule a repair visit. They advised me that the visit would be $80 and the repairman would tell me what the parts would cost. If it is the ERC, I assume that this will be as much as $700 (based on one post).

Since the range is 11/2 years old, this is rather upsetting, so I am very interested in alternatives.

I am prepared to open the box to look at the wiring, keypad and ERC, but am not sure how to do this without messing up. I have a friend who has a lot of home electrical equipment and may have the necessary meters, but if necessary, I am happy to buy or rent them.

I need some instructions about how to proceed (and not muck up our range further).

Do you have the tech sheet for the range? It’ll either be inside the control console, in the very back of the range in an envelope taped to the back panel, or in the pots drawer cavity. You’ll need it to troubleshoot. First order of bidness will to confirm that you have a valid 120vac power supply to the ERC. If that’s good, then you’ll need a new ERC and/or touchpanel (depending on the ‘pacifics of your model). Installing the new ERC can be tricky because GE has gone to the one-kind-fits-many circuit boards for most older models.
