Generator connected to the grid

November 29th, 2009

Today while laying some mains cables i was working with an electrical engineer, we started a conversation about generating plants–engine driven, connected to the grid.

To my surprise he said that if the driving engine suddenly died that the grid would keep the alternator turning a constant speed like an electric motor and therefore keep the engine running, just consuming power rather then generating it?

To me it sounded like B/S but he said this was correct, is this true??

No, he is being truthful.
If the prime mover is not there (loss of fuel, steam…), the generator is going to be picked up as a load by the system, if it can.
As you can imagine, this is bad news for all parts of the system.
In power generating, the output ckt bkrs will have some form of a reverse power trip. Basically, if it becomes a motor instead of a generator, it will be tripped off the line.
This reverse power relay was simple on the old, Direct Current generators (I ran into some back in the Navy).
The relay gets a lot more complex with today’s AC systems and all of its harmonics.
