Grading Next to House

November 14th, 2009

We bought a new house and need to grade things down to draw water away. I want to install plant beds along the sides of the house anyway, so plan to build up the beds and slope them down away from the house.

My question is… do I need to put anything between the house and the dirt? The house wall is brick/mortar on top of concrete slab. Is there a flashing I should use? The last thing I want to do is bring more moisture to the house through the soil!

It is best not to disturb the soil next to the foundation. You certainly don’t want to raise the level of the soil above the sill plate and create moisture problems. Plantings should be out beyond the drip edge of the roof and not up against the house so they can get rain and sun and not interfere with the foundation. Slope the lawn away from the house so that water drains away. Best regards.
