help i have a sinkhole and no sinkhole insurance

October 30th, 2009

we purchased our home two years ago and there were no history of sinkholes.this past june when the rain started coming in we noticed a small sinkhole developed on the side of my home about 3 feet from the house.these past days it rained all weekend and now the sinkhole has grown immensely and is now a about a feet away from the foudation of my house measuring approximately 2 feet deep by eight feet wide.there are no visible signs of any damage to my house and to make it a little worse i found out we are not covered for sinkholes with the insurance.do you guys have any suggestions how we can fix this before it gets any worse? thanks in advance

first thing; are you in a state where sinkholes are common? I ask because a collapsed septic tank is around that size and if the top collapses, it will make a sinkhole, of sorts as well.

so, with that, I would make sure it is a sinkhole and hope that is not.

the bad news; if it is, I don;t think you have much chance of affecting it. Some sinkholes are due to collapsed salt domes well into the ground. How big it would be would be difficult to determine so throwing gravel and such in the hole may be about as successful as trying to empty the ocean with a teacup.
