HELP-Leaking pressure switch

February 3rd, 2010

Hello – I have a submersible pump with a captive air tank fitted with a Square D pressure switch. Although, the power to well was turned off, there apparently was water in the cpvc pipe which split when the furnace conked out and everything froze. Now when the water is on, it leaks through the pressure switch. Is it possible that the freeze destroyed the diaphragm in the switch? Am I correct in assuming that it uses a diaphragm to measure the pressure? Is it difficult to replace a pressure switch? I can do simple electrical stuff like replacing ground fault interrupters, know how to use a multitester, etc. and understand how the tank, etc. works, but because it has never failed, don’t know about the pressure switch. Any help you can give will be appreciated. Thank you.

You are correct about the diaphragm.
Changing out a square D pressure switch is pretty simple.

Before disconnecting the wires write down the colors and where they go. If I am not mistaken most pressure switches wire up the same. Disconnect power and remove the wires.
Spin off the control and install new one with pipe dope or teflon tape on the threads. re-hook your wires as they were, and you’re all done.
If you purchase a pressure switch with different operation pressures, lets say from 20/40 to 30/50, you will need to reset the air charge in your expansion tank to 3 psi under your cut in pressure(lower number).
Good luck
