Humming/vibrating pipes after toilet flush

November 17th, 2009

I’d be really grateful if anyone can help…….

The problem started a couple of weeks ago after the water was turned off from the mains. Since it was turned back on, there is a really loud, high pitched humming/vibrating noise each time the toilet is flushed. The noise starts as the cistern is about 3/4 full and continues until it has stopped filling.

If I turn on the cold water tap in the bathroom while the cistern is filling, the noise doesn’t happen.

I have tried adjusting the water pressure from the mains, and the noise still happens even when the pressure is lower than practical.

I’ve also tried turning off the water from the mains, running all the taps in the house to empty the pipes of all water, leaving them empty for a couple of hours, and turning the water back on.

Any ideas/ solutions/ suggestions would be great.

Thanks

The problem is in your toilet fill valve. Depending on its type the fix may be as simple as removing the internal parts and flushing dirt from the valve or as complicated as replacing the entire valve assembly. Replacing the valve assembly is usually not a real complicated job.
