Just replaced an outlet for the dishwasher/garbage disposal

November 22nd, 2009

After swapping the outlet it flipped the breaker, but then I reset it and now it works fine. My only problem or question, is that I want one plug to work off the switch(garbage disposal) and the other(dishwasher) to run off the outlet. Right now both run off the switch on the wall. Is there a way to split it? I did see some instruction on the box that you rip a piece of the outlet off and that should do it.

A little more info… when I swapped outlets, the previous one was a little bit different it was the plug-in type but the one I got was the more generic screw in type but both are the same amps and volts. I just copied the previous set up with the new outlet, but not sure one how to get one to run continously and the other to run off the switch.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Well, in general, to get one outlet of a duplex to be controlled by a switch yes, you would break the tabs off like the instructions say. Then you would wire up each outlet of the duplex separately – they’ll no longer be connected at all – it is like having a 2 gang box now or something. I imagine you might or might not need at least an 18 cubic inch box, though, which you may or may not have in there.

I’m pretty sure you should have a separate circuit for your disposal vs. your dishwasher, though.
