Kenmore Coldspot 106.9730611 started making noise like distant engine idling

November 4th, 2009

We have a Kenmore Coldspot 106.9730611 from 1994 that has run flawlessly and I’ve been good about annually vacuuming the coils under it. Today, it began making a quiet noise like a distant diesel engine idling. Not loud, but in a quiet room it can be heard across the room.

This is a 20cu foot top freezer model and I’m wondering if anyone has a suggestion? I have a mechanic’s stethescope and can pull it away from the wall to identify the component. I’m thinking it’s the compressor. Is this something I can charge and would that be a likely fix? It has CFC11 and CFC12 in it according to the label.

It just started making noise and was absolutely silent, so I’m hoping by catching it early I may be able to repair it. Thanks.

What say ye?

Compressors do start to make that noise.

Sometimes it’s just the internal motor mountings go bad, or the compressor itself.

Either way, the compressor would have to be replaced.

It’s an expensive fix $$$ and would have to be done by a pro.

If you can live with it, OK, otherwise, if it gets worse, time to start shopping for a new fridge.
