Kenmore Series 90 Help Request

October 11th, 2009

During a wash cylce the venerable Kenmore 90 (K90) started making some strange grinding noise (noise started during the begining/middle of the drainage of the wash cycle). Before I found the noble one, I found a site that said the most probable cause was a damaged coupling. Got it–replaced it last night and started the “test drive”.

All seemed as majestic as noble Fuji until the end of the drainage cycle. During the latter part of the drainage cycle I heard a rubbry squeel and started to smell smoke. Took everything apart again and rechecked my work. Everything looked good so I decided to run it again! Once again, the wash cylce was as serene as the lotus blossom. Once the drain cycle started the foul odor of smoke emanated from the motor/pump area. I removed the pump and found the shaft hot enough to heat an onsen.

The pump does not turn freeley by hand at the shaft input. I believe this is the root of the problem O noble one.

Am I correct or do I need to do more trouble shooting?

Sounds like you have an item caught inbetween the spin basket and outer tub … the item floats around during agitate and gets partially sucked in durind the drain cycle…..the motor spins one way and the pump cavitates… to drain, the motor reverses and the pump starts to pump out….. run a pump-out cycle with the pump not attached…. does the motor still heat up………… you could have damaged the pump shaft seal…..replace the pump… you are already there…. find out what is stopping the pump….
