Kirby G4 won’t run

November 1st, 2009

My wife reported that there was a horrible sound, then a cloud of smoke, then silence.

I tore it down & saw a jammed impeller. Gave the machine a sniff test, and it didn’t smell ‘burnt’ at all so I figured the motor was still intact & the ’smoke’ she saw was probably dust.

Replaced fan/impeller. . . but after re-assembly I get nothing. No hum, no indication that the motor wants to run.

Anyone know where to look first? One of the archived posts on this site says there is no thermal switch. Does anyone know where I might find a schematic to confirm.

Thanks,

There are two safety switches, one where the nozzle attaches and one where the bag attaches. If these two switches aren’t depressed, the motor will not run. A little vaseline on the plastic switches will keep them operating smoothly.

There are also motor brushes that may have overheated or burned. I believe recommended min length is 1/2″. Hopefully the motor armature/commutator is okay. The power switch itself or a bad cord are the only other tangibles.

Assuming you have wall current, sometimes the wall socket has a switch, does the light come on even though the motor doesn’t start? Does the impeller spin freely now?

Remember to unplug the unit before putting your hands in a hazardous position.

Good luck and let us know what you find.
