landfill

January 5th, 2010

i have a sunken area in my lawn. i need to fill anywhere from 3 to 5 inches, and replant grass. 2 questions. 1) i have sand i need to find use for, can i use some sand & plant grass over it? 2) do i just take a sample of grass to home depot & say…”what kind of grass is this?”

When I saw your thread title I had visions of a large city landfill. You just want to fill in a place in your back yard. How big is this area anyway? I hope it is not as large as the city landfill because you will need lots of soil. For small areas in my lawn, I’ve always picked up a few bags of top soil from the garden center. Slit them open with my trusty Uncle Henry pocket knife and either dumped out or scooped out the amount of soil needed. Grass needs organic matter to thrive, and sand scores a “0″ for organic material. If this area is going to require, say, a truckload of soil, perhaps your local garden center can arrange for someone to deliver you a quantity of soil.

As indicated in my previous post to you, the one where you wanted to eliminate all your grass because it grew too long too quickly, you need to contact your local Dept. of Agriculture Extension Agent for the best grass seed mix recommended for your growing zone. I can just see you walking in to Home Depot with a grass blade in hand and asking one of the kids to identify it. You local Dept of Agriculture should be able to tell you whether you have Blue Grass, Fescue, or a mix, or Bermuda, etc.

Best regards.
