leaky tub faucet no brand

October 30th, 2009

we have a drip in our tub faucet can’t find a brand identification anywhere and I have looked at several types and can’t find what ours looks like when we remove the handles there is a long stem but we can’t see anyway of removing this stem pleas help we have a little girl here who has had seven surgeries for brain tumors and we need our tub because she can’t take showers and it is dripping to the point of losing several gallons of water a day

If this is a traditional tub faucet where the faucet body is inside the wall and the stems stick out through the tile then:

The stems are held in place by one or more bushing(s) or similar part(s) which can be removed using specific deep sockets known as a “plumbers socket set”.Because there are a wide variety of possible sizes, this is a set of six or so sockets.

You may have to remove the tile around the opening to gain access to the stems. The bushing may be fairly deep inside or may not be and there may be more than one holding the stems in.Once these are removed the stems will screw out just like you’d turn on the faucet.

Take the stems to a hardware store to make sure you get the proper washers as there are a variety of sizes.also replace any other o-ring or gasket the stem may have.

Examine the stems for damage and if they appear to be beyond repair then replace them.you must replace them with an exact duplicate or it will not fit correctly.again take them with you for matching.there are many many varieties.

Obviously turn the water off to this faucet before you do anything.Repair both sides as it’s likely they both need it.
