maytag dryer intermittent ceasing

November 10th, 2009

Hi I service an apt. complex with 2 washrooms. The commercial maytag machines i believe were bought around the same time. About 6 months ago i replaced the motor on one of the dryers. It had the typical screeching and whining coming from the motor. The other dryer in question i am told, that especially at the beginning of the day, possibly the first use that the dryer won’t start up and i guess the motor possibly buzzes when the start button is pushed. I also was told by one tennant if they physically push one of the baffles to turn the drum that this solves it sometime and the motor will start up. I tested it yesterday in the middle of the day with no load and i stopped and restarted it and never saw a problem. I put my amp meter on it and at start up it pulled about 24 amps and then immediately went to 6.5 amps. I even put my arm on a baffle fin while it was running to stop the drum to compare it to the other dryer and i feel like it took the same amount of force on both of them before they stopped automatically from the excessive drag. Also, when i turn the drum by hand the tension seems to be equal to the working dryer. Is the motor possibly cutting out? The model is mdg16csaww Thanks

If the symptoms that the tenants described can be trusted, then it think that it is safe to say that the motor is bad. I have experienced the same symptoms several times before and motor replacement was the fix. The problem will probably continue to occur more frequently as time progresses, so just wait till they the tenants complain a little bit more to confirm the motor.
