Maytag MAV7000AWW makes sharp metal sound
Maytag MAV7000AWW, 9 years old, on its second transmission, started making a metal-to-metal sound similar to two Samurai swords locked in fierce battle, during the drain portion of the spin cycle. Sound starts when cycle switches from agitate to spin, and is constant until water flow slows. No sound during actual spin runup or throughout spin cycle. This started about a month ago, at which time I investigated said machine’s underside (belt was in proper place), water pump (no foreign objects), outer tub (no foreign objects and, well, clean it up while you’re in there).
Though as whiny as many 9 year olds the machine worked, so after a week of angry looks it was placed back into service with cautionary warnings. The sound actually receeded for a while. Then yesterday on an otherwise beautiful Midwest summer day my malt beverage enjoyment was rudely inturrupted.
The machine noise became quite loud and then stopped with a big clank and will now not even spin (or drain). Agitation works fine in both directions.
It’s not uncommon at all for the pump on these units to cause just what you are describing.
There’s a metal insert that somehow keeps the pulley aligned and attached to pump and the metal insert works it’s way out then start scrapping against the bottom of the pump making the horrible noise, then eventually it jams everything up.
Lean the machine back and remove the belt. Turn the pump pulley by hand and see if the pulley seems to be floppy on the shaft and if you see a silver shiny thin metal piece sticking up between the center of the pulley and bottom of pump.
