Mice chewed my fire alarm wires
I live in a building with hardwired fire alarms. The building alarms went off and the fire dept came. They couldnt shut the alarms off and checked all the alarms. An alarm in the basement was the culprit. The fire department said theyd allow it to be disabled but the fire inspector will come tomorrow. So After taking a careful look at the alarm I see part of the wire (the stuff that looks like speaker wire) had some mouse chew on it. Now instead of having an electrician come in, billing us a ton of money to fish a new wire, can I just cut the mouse chew and splice the split ends with wire nuts and tape them off and have it be done with? Or do I need one wire from alarm to the fire panel?
When dealing with “fire alarm systems” there is no difference between working on the panel or the interconnecting wiring.
What you are wanting to do is also not an emergency repair as you have no intention of calling someone qualified to come in later.
I can appreciate you being the maintenance person and the pressure you may be getting from the building owner to cut costs.
The fact is however that it is not right nor legal for you to tamper with an alarm system.
Your tenants lives depend on it.
