need advice

October 19th, 2009

we have a 22 year old coleman unit (i know. quit complaining.) for our upstairs that was having issues. it was freezing up, so we had our ac guy come out and add freon. it worked to cool the upstairs once. then, everytime it would start it would make a really loud noise and not push out cold air. so we had our guy come back and he said that it was toast. he suggested just replacing the outside unit and not the inside, since it was sill working. although we don’t have the money now, we want to eventually purchase a new unit that runs on puron, but that is not an option right now.
my question is this: how do i know what type of unit to buy. when i called coleman to ask what size unit ours was, they said that the seer ratings needed to be the same. how can i find out what my seer rating is on my handler?

I can tell you to stay away from Puron. Everytime you need a freon charge it will be a thousand dollars or more. You can’t add freon to a Puron System. You have to evacuate the system 100%, recover the refrigerant, claim it, then re-charge it.

Stick with a 410-A, 13 SEER + Unit. Don’t worry too much about brand. Most of them carry the same warranties now a days. Just make sure it’s a legit factory warranty.
