need help installing a switch
I am trying to install a new light switch to an existing light, actually two lights. How do you connect the switch to the lights. I was told to put black with white and white with black when it came to switches. I am obviously doing something wrong because that does not work. I was told this would be easy, I need HELP!!
can only guess what you have there.
There are two colors associated with the power handling to a device. Black and white. Black is the hot lead and white the return or neutral.
Depending on what you have it could be….
Black and white enter box feeding power. Another cable enters box. The two whites are connected together with a wire nut. One black goes to one terminal of the switch, the other black goes to the other terminal. If you had an additional light cable in the box, its white would connect with all the others as above and the black would attach to the switch screw terminal where the black to the other light attached.
This may or may bot be what you have. If not describe exactly what you are looking at in your box.
