new outlet on a 2-20 amp circuit

November 13th, 2009

We have an outlet for an a/c that actually runs in a pipe on the outside of the house. I had the bright idea of adding an electric outlet to it on the outside since we did not have any electric to our patio. Well we turned off the electric (obviously), cut the pipe and connected a gfi 20-amp outlet. When we turned the elctric back on the air conditioner works perfectly but anything we plug into the new outlet on the outside, goes haywire. A light blew out. A radio started to make crackling noises but will still now work in another outlet. The original wire is directly wired to the circuit breaker box and is attached to 2-20 amp circuit breakers. Does this mean it is more electric than a regular outlet can handle? The outlet has a green “ready” light which is lit but we have turned off the circuit breaker until I can get an answer. I know the answer is always call a certified electrician but we have done many electrical jobs before including hooking up new circuit breakers and circuits, we just have not attached to a double circuit breaker before.

You should leave the A/C circuit alone and run new circuit for patio for this set up.

The only way you can slove the issue is get the oringal wire respliced back together and leave that alone due that circuit is 240 volts.,, sure some case the white wire not always be a netural it can be hot conductor as well.

You will have to run a new circuit in the box.

What kind of pipe you are talking about the EMT or PVC ??

and what size it is [ normally i know they are either 1/2 or 3/4 inch size for most common useage]

What type of wire inside the conduit ?? NM [ romex ] or THHN/THWN ??

Let us know then we can able steer ya in right way.
