old oversize closet flange, no bolt holes

November 23rd, 2009

Hi, I’m remodeling my extra bath room and when I ripped out the toliet I discovered the cast iron closet flange has no holes or slots for the toliet hold down bolts.

The old toliet, which is probably 50 years old, was held down by four bolts that were screwed in to the sub floor. There were 2 bolts in front of the toliet and 2 bolts on the back side.

The flange itself is about 7-1/4″ round OD and the ID is about 5″ for about 4″ deep and then it decreases to 4″ the rest of the way.

I’ve been to ace, home depot, lowes, and menards but I’m not sure what to buy. I seen the complete and partial rings to put on the flange to repair broken flange holes but with the 5″ opening I dont think the wax ring will seal.

I was thinking I might be able to put a flange extender on top of it and hold it down with one of the repair rings, but is that advisable? Also if I can do that, do I use the rubber gasket they sell or caulk or wax or combo, between the flange and extender? and between the ring and extender?

Has any one ran in to this problem? Any suggestions?

Sounds kind of odd to me. Is there a way you could take some pictures of it and upload them to a picture storage site like photobucket.com or something like it?

What floor are you working on? Is it a finished ceiling below?

Are you sure the flange is cast iron and not an old lead flange. They used to just pound the flange over the edge of the floor and use closet screws instead of bolts to hold down the toilet. If that is the case, good luck. I have been able to reset on those flanges before, but need to cross my fingers after. I couldn’t replace the flange because it was on the 2nd floor and the slumlord didn’t want to fix it properly.
