Outlet Box Mounted on PVC?

November 11th, 2009

Hi all,

I am replacing the branch circuit to an outdoor fountain pump in Denver, CO using buried 3/4″ schedule 80 PVC. Everything was going smoothly (for a novice) until the wooden post holding the outlet box broke off at its rotted, below-grade base.

Before attempting to repair the post, I would like your advice on this alternate outlet box mounting solution which seems easier if it will pass inspection:

In business areas around Denver I have seen outdoor PVC outlet boxes mounted directly on a pair of 3/4″ PVC conduits emerging 6″ straight out of the ground. (I think it was PVC except it was colored black.) I wiggled one and it was fairly secure. Simple and neat.

Can I do this for my backyard fountain pump?

You can probably do this, but I’d recommend just replacing the post. If you use treated lumber, it should be at least 20 years before you need to do it again.
