Previous owner installed mismatched system – help

February 4th, 2010

Background: So I bought this house a year ago knowing NOTHING about A/C units (and apparently my home inspector didn’t either). Come to find out, I have a 2 year old RUUD 13 SEER condenser and a 10 year old Carrier 10 SEER air handler. If it matters, its also a heat pump.

The Issue: On really hot, humid days (pretty much June – September or more in Tampa) the unit has trouble keeping the house at 78. Some days I’ve watched the tstat climb all the way up to 81 (I don’t know if its really even a possibility for this scenario, but I’ve checked to make sure the coil isn’t frozen).

Obviously I need to fix this, but would like to do it in the most economical matter possible, so here are my questions:
* Can I just get the coil in the in the air handler replaced or do I need to replace the whole thing?
* If I can get away with just a coil, should the coil be a Ruud or a Carrier or does it matter? (I’ve heard that you’re supposed to match brands…)

I’ve probably left out a ton of needed info, but don’t really know what you guys need. Thanks for any help.

You must replace the coil!

Replace the coil with any brand you desire if it is located (downstreem – outside the airhandler/furnace . Make sure you get a “Heatpump” cased evaporator coil and is 13 seer (WITH AN EXPANSION VALVE). If the coil is uncased and located inside the airhandler, you must buy the same brand.

There are no other options or quick fixes.
