problem with my humidifier

I’m having a little problem with my humidifier. I received it from an Aunt and didn’t get a book on it. How do I keep the water maintained? Is there a way I can put anything in it to have a nice smell through the house? I have tried bleach and am not sure that is the right thing to use…Help please!
You do not say what type of humidifier you have but if it is a portable you fill it as needed.
You would do better deodorizing your house some other way as any foreign material in the water will foul the pads or whatever is used to disperse the water.
