scale in pipes

January 21st, 2010

OK, I searched and didn’t find a thread with this so here goes… I live in a 15 year old double wide on a slab. We are on well water and I have 2 whole house water filters in series to deal with the hard water. (Calcium, lime and iron) The first one has a cheap pleated paper filter to remove the bulk of the gunk and the second a slightly more expensive activated charcoal filter for taste. I replace them regularly. This has seemed to be functioning alright. I have had to clean out the water heater twice. Recently, I have noted a dramatic decrease in the cold water pressure. I tried flushing through with CLR and that made a little difference. Without replumbing the whole darn thing is there a way to remove the scale that I assume has built up after 15 years? Thanks for any help you can offer.

You may want to consider a water softener. It helps remove dissolved solids (like calcium) so they don’t make it into your pipes and appliances.

You can get a hardness test kit at your local hardware store to see if it’s worth the addition of a softener.
