Scandisk hangs on 63%, CHKDSK at 15%.

November 14th, 2009

While playing last week, my computer hung displaying a frame from Bioshock and stayed like that for 10 minutes before I just cut the power from the system. (I know… but I did try Ctrl+Alt+Del and Alt+Tab and all I could think of… nothing). Upon trying to reboot, the computer hung on the Windows bar, although the bar never stopped moving, it never went to the operating sytem, just displayed the WinXP logo and the scrolling bar under it.

Reset button, wouldn’t you? I did too.

So rebooted and WinXP went to Scandisk as expected and started “Cheking for inconsistencies… (Step 1 of 3)” and hung on 63%. After an hour, buttoned-forced to reboot. Yet again hung on 63%. Now, the interesting thing is that as soon as Scandisk hits 63%, the computer case’s HD led does not turn off, it only dims (half the brightness).

So I went and used the WinXP CD, and tried to reinstall windows, and hour later, 15% was all that it displayed.

Tried recorevy console’s CHKDSK, which also hung on 15%. Now, the interesting thing is that as soon as CHKSDK hits 15%, the computer case’s HD led turns off.

Bootsearch /scan stated that the boot partition was corrupted, so CHKDSK was suggested.

Fixboot was used, then Fixmbr, and both displayed succes in operation.

Rebooted, Scandisk hung on 63% with a dimmed led.

Used CHKDSK again, 15%, turned the led off, and that was all.

HD problem right? Used HDDRegenerator v1.41 (great tool!!) and gave a clean bill of health.

Scandisk hung on 63% and dimmed the led. CHKDSK got to 15% and turned the led off.

All I have now is repartition and fresh install, but unfortunatelly the last batch of files which were to be backed up that very night are there, and I wanted to use recovery console to save them, but I get “Access denied” when I try to go into “Documents and Settings”.

Reading around I found that a Win2000 startup floppy set would help by using its recovery console. Is it true?

Is there a way to do this with WinXP?

Any suggestion to recover the files will be greatly appreciated.

PS: Hard drives are 2 WD 300GB in SATA Stripe mode with WinXP Pro SP2.

I would check my memory sticks by removing all but one at a time while trying to boot with each stick..
