Sizing a Pressure Reducing Valve

November 7th, 2009

I need to install a pressure reducing valve in my home but I can’t seem to find anything that tells me what size valve to get. How do I figure out what size valve to buy?
I might add that I have two baths, a dishwasher, and a washing machine. I do not have a lawn sprinkler system. The local Lowes carries two Watts PRVs; a 1 inch, 38 GPM (at 20 psi drop) model, and a 3/4 inch, 22 GPM (at 20 psi drop) model. I don’t want to undersize the PRV and kill the flow rate in the house and I’m told that an oversized PRV is not good either.

Hello

Why have you determined you need a PRV ?

If your water service is only 3/4″ and you have high pressure already, and taking into consideration the fixture count you gave me, and if I am reading the chart correctly, you will be fine with a 3/4″ PRV .

If your main is 1″ I would just stay with 1″ so you do not restrict the flow. But I would only think you would need 1″ if you had low water pressure.
