Whirpool direct drive washer pump removal
Allrighty boys and girls, here’s the latest happenings in Birmingham, AL… It’s Sunday afternoon, the tide lost yesterday so all is well and I’m in a good mood (War Eagle!). I decide that I’m going to play hero and fix my g/f’s washing machine for her, armed with my secret knowledge from the Samurai I am feeling competent and ready to woo her with my ability to fix just abut anything. That’s when it started to go downhill…
She’s got a basic whirlpool direct drive machine, no big deal. Had to replace the drive coupler, couldn’t get the pump off so I removed the motor and pump together and replaced the fubar’ed coupler. All was well until I discovered that the pump is now leaking a bit. Looks like it’s leaking from the very bottom of the plastic housing. The fool thing will not come off, it has some play in it, will pull back about 1/4 an inch or so but no further. Looks to be the original pump.
Is there a seal in there? It’s pretty crusty around the bottom of the frame with rust and crud although she swears it wasn’t leaking before. Not being one to argue and lessen my get lucky factor in this deal I gracefully withheld comment about all the rust. Anywho – how do I get this flippin’ pump off the motor? Looks like I’m gonna have to bite the bullet and get a new pump but still have the removal dilema at hand. Do I just use a BFH (aka: fine adjustment tool) and a screwdriver to mangle it off the motor shaft and tell her to go do something other than look over my shoulder while performing this operation, or am I missing some secret unknown movement of finesse?
did you remove the two spring clips? if its just rusted on i take the motor/pump assembly and lay it on cement at a 45 degree angle with the motor in the air and the pump resting on the cement. I then take my trusty 2lb sledge hammer and with one or two blows split the pump in half allowing it to be removed. you must sand/file all of the rust off the motor shaft so the new pump will slide on, if there is resistance when installing the new pump you havent cleaned it well enough.
