overflow pan. too much water? Why?

January 12th, 2010

OK…total newbie here when it comes to AC! noticed a leak and when investigated, the overflow pan of the AC in the attic looks like it overflowed onto the floor? What should I look for? I noticed that there is a PVC pipe connected to the bottom of the pan that leads to the side of the house and then what looks like to be a PVC pipe sort of P-Trap (looks more like a T actually).

Unfortunately I will not be able to stay at home to watch the AC during the day since I just started a new job and can’t take any time off. Few questions:

Is it normal for the water to even overflow to the pan?

Can I pour Clorox into the T opening to make sure that the drain is not clogged up (will the Clorox go back into the AC unit?)?

I know that the primary drain has worked fine in the past….the unit is seven years old and always noticed the condensation dripping regularly outside.

What are my next steps?

Thanks for the help!

Looks like both of your drainliens are clogged. first, you should not see water in the pan which is your second drainline to drain the water to after your first drainline clogged. Clorox may help, but may be too late now. you can try, won’t hurt. won’t go back to ac unit. Usually, in newer system, first drain line drain water to your plumbing system and you won’t see the water. the water dripping you see is your second drainline drain water from the pan. In fact the second drain line and the pan should never be used, it is a back up system, and you should never see water in the pan or dripping from the side of the house.
