Thermostat, Compressor, Drain pan…oh my!

November 14th, 2009

The last couple of nights the AC has stayed on and over-cooled the house below thermostat setting. I turned it to off and it stopped, so I believe the thermostat may need replacing. Something I noticed last night though, the compressor outside did not go off. Before I do more checking, what do I need to look for? I am a novice at best about this stuff, so any help and putting things in layman terms will be best. If at all possible, I really need to fix this myself. This area is notorious for unscrupulous repair companies that charge arms and legs. My arm has a leanholder already and the leg is being appraised right now for other expenses.

If the outdoor unit runs with the stat in the off position, a test would be to turn off the breaker to the indoor system. It’s what tells the outdoor unit to come on. If it still runs, it’s possibly a contactor that has welded together. Don’t let it run like that without the fan inside running as you can damage the compressor and spend another limb. As it is, a contactor should only cost you a couple of fingers.
