three way light switches

December 17th, 2009

i have a three way light switch – one switch is a dimmer, the other is a simple on/off. The wiring/set up is relatively new (10 years). My dimmer switch blew out, and i have purchased two new ones – and blew them both out in attempting to replace it (BIG flash). The wiring into the switch box contains one black and one red coming in, and one black going out (a different conduit pipe). The wires are not coded for hot. how do i find out which is hot and which are travelers (can i use a circuit tester?), and once i figure it out, how do i properly connect the switch?

The light fixture lies between the two switches (one switch at each end of the hallway.

Since I’ve now blown through two perfectly good switches, i thought i’d look to the experts.

The single black has to be the COMMON connection.
