venting a toilet

November 22nd, 2009

If a toilet is an S-trap that is replenished when it is flushed, why does it need to be vented?

It actually works on a siphon.

Just something I’ve been pondering lately.

Because you want to keep some of the water in the bowl. Without a vent you could lose that water. You are correct the toilet would still flush without it thats why when someone comes here and says my toilet won’t flush could it be a vent problem we say no, its a clog.
