Water In Basement Washing Machine

November 10th, 2009

part question really:
1. water collects in the washer in the basement. I turned off the supply lines to the washer but it still happens. As best as I can tell the water is coming from some other source in another part of the house and flowing into the washer through the same line that takes the water out of the washer. The only way I’ve been able to eliminate this is to turn off the water at the main valve. Any suggestions?
2. I’ve got to go away for a few days real soon and will turn the water off at the main valve–I’m afraid it might overfill the wahser and leak into the basement. If I do this, should I turn off the pilot on the hot water heater?

The water is most likely not coming from the discharge hose. Because it can’t pass backwards through the pump on the machine. What is the pressure coming into the house? It should be less that 90psi. Most likely the valves don’t shut off completely on the washer supply lines. Disconnect the hoses at the valves and put a bucket underneath to catch the water. Replace/repair the valves if the water leaks by. Also have an appliance tech check out the machine to see if there is a problem with it. You do not need to turn off the pilot. But you should turn the temperture dial to it’s lowest setting. I hope this helps.
Good Luck,
