Well pump/tank question

November 7th, 2009

My well pump, which is in the utility room on top of the diaphram tank, started acting funny, cycling rapidly 10 or 15 times before shutting off. It would pump up to 40 psi, shut off, then pressure would drop to 20 psi in about one second, pump would go on, and repeat about 15 times before stopping at a little above 20 psi.
I replaced the diaphram tank, precharged to 18 psi, and it made no difference. Pump looked kind of old, so replaced it, no difference. Pulled up the pipes from the well, and the ejector unit and foot valve looked very crusty, so replaced them, and still the pump acts the same.
Well is 95 feet deep, foot valve is at 90 feet, pump is 1/2 hp 115v, two lines going to it.
Any ideas on what I did wrong or what I missed would be greatly appreciated.

You didn’t mention the pressure switch. Did you replace it? You might be able to determine if it is bad by just tinkering with the switch’s settings for on and off pressures. Also, are you sure about 120 volts? That’s a bit strange for pumps as they are usually 240 volts.
