Whirlpool LSQ9010PW6

November 8th, 2009

The washer is 3 years old. Agitates fine and even spins after wash cycle with no problem. When gets to the spin cycle after rinse, it adds water once or twice for a few seconds, and then just sits there. Can hear the motor running. Have opened the lid, given the agitator a push or two and sometimes it will start very slowly and begrudgingly spins. Clothes are still wetter than normal.

I have taken these steps:

Broken down machine and checked direct drive coupling. Seemed in fine shape. No oil on floor or gearbox and no shavings on floor.

Jumped the switch and checked that clutch was spinning while machine was running, also fine.

Checked pump hoses and in drum area for any foreign material-none.

At first I thought it was the switch, as it seems confused after it gets to the spin cycle (adds water intermittently ). However, since it usually starts spinning after I manually give it a turn or two, I started thinking clutch/transmission.

This machine has always made a very loud noise when it starts a new cycle. It can be best described as clanging two pots together. Not sure if relevant.

Your divine wisdom would be appreciated.

Sounds like the clutch. You can clean it if you like , but replacing is usually better. When you have the trans. and clutch out , you can stick your hand on the bskt. drive and give it a small spin to be sure it works o.k.- 1/8 of a revolution would be fine. The clunk you hear is sort of normal – some seem to be louder than others(could be the area it is in) but they all do it. On top of the spin tube , under agitator , there will be a large nut – it should be tight with drive block and spin tube all lined up and in place.
