whirlpool pool dishwasher

I have a 4 year old whirlpool dishwasher. For two nights in a row, we smelt a funny smell coming from it. We thought a plastic cup was it and then all of a sudden it went POOF. Something blew and a little black smoke came out the top. Im pretty good with fixing stuff but I have never messed with a dishwasher. I think it might be the thermal fuse but then again, I have no clue. Please help!
Shut electric off to dishwasher, pull the bottom two panels and carefully inspect wiring to the dishwasher to see if a wire was against metal and shorted out.
I would check this first, see if any internal wires were shorted in the same manner.
Check to make sure nothing got into the pump that caused an overload.
