Windows XP won’t boot at start up – suspected virus damage

October 29th, 2008

I have an ‘Idlist’ problem that arises when trying to run XP from task manager. Am running from Task manager because on boot up, desktop icons and start menu and task bar are all absent – all that is visible is wallpaper. AVG ran from Task Manager and deleted the viruses it found. Trojan generic10 and another similar one. But still no joy on startup.

my startup reads checked

winpatrol
qttask
iffxtray
igfxpers
apdproxy
dumprep 0 -u
ctfmon
NMBgMonitor
Adobe Reader Speed Launch

As far as my untrianed eye can see, the dumprep 0-u looks odd – all the others shouldn’t be interrupting my start up?

any help greatly appreciated.

Mot enough info in that list you posted to assess much. Dumprep is created when your system experiences an error – the type that ask to be sent to MS usually. But let’s take a more detailed look at things here. If it helps to create at least this first log you can try rebooting into Safe Mode (at startup tap F8 and select that from the list).

To keep them from interfering with the repairs, be sure to temporarily disable all antivirus/anti-spyware softwares while these steps are being completed. This can usually be done through right clicking the software’s Taskbar icons, or accessing each software through Start – Programs.
