Wirlpool Side by Side defrosted

January 21st, 2010

My Whirlpool ED25DQ side by side defrosted. The problem began with the interior lights flickering, and at times burning as if on reduced voltage. The refrigerator no longer kept cool although the thermostat was set to its coldest setting. This happened on the freezer and refrigerator sides. Eventually neither light came on, and the unit stopped cooling. The fan at the bottom of the device continues to run, but that is all. Has anyone seen this symptom, or know of a fix for this problem?

thanks

Unplug the refrigerator from the wall, remove any panel in the botom back that covers the compressor. Plug it back in and listen for sounds from the compressor, if it hums and then clicks after just a few seconds, either the compressor is bad, or the relay that powers it is bad. If it does that hum and click, unplug the refrigerator again, and remove the relay assemble from the compressor. It usually will be held on by a metal clip or plastic cover. Remove it and shake it, if it sounds like there is sand or rocks inside, the relay is bad, and will need to be replaced. Good luck.
